Women & Mining

How does mining affect women specifically?

Mining can affect the safety of women when transient male workforces” bring increased alcohol, sex workers, and violence into a community. (Oxfam 2024)

When mining impacts the environment, it makes it more difficult for women to provide food and clean water to their families, roles that fall to women in most countries of the world.

Mining toxins can affect maternal health and cause birth defects and miscarriages.

Women rarely receive the compensation and benefits that men do from mining, which can increase women’s dependence on men and reinforce patriarchal systems

Women are rarely consulted when companies negotiate access to land, compensation, or benefits.

We are investing in women impacted by mining and organizations saying “no” to mining as well as those helping women and their families mitigate or be compensated for mining’s impacts.

Deep Sea Mining Coalition

We also provide support to the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition to counter deep-sea mining. The Deep Sea is defined as “the ocean at depths of more than 200m. ” It stretches across about two-thirds of the total seafloor and is the largest biome on Earth, harboring an extraordinary diversity of life that has adapted over millions of years to the extreme conditions of living in the deep ocean. We are only just beginning to understand the life forms at this depth and how they have adapted to living in extreme cold (or extreme heat, for those species that live in hydrothermal vents), with little sunlight and under high pressure. Our knowledge of the deep sea is very limited, but already, humans have benefited from the incredible species that live here, including discoveries of several antibiotics, painkillers, anti-cancer drugs, and even used in diagnostics for the coronavirus. But lying on the deep-sea floor bed in some areas are polymetallic nodules, which are lumps of rock about the size and shape of a baking potato. These polymetallic nodules have been found to contain minerals such as cobalt, copper, and manganese –rals currently in high demand for nickel, and many those very mine renewable energy technologies. The area particularly under threat from mining is the Clipperton Zone in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii - a priority area for the Superbloom Fund. The Deep Sea Conservation Coalition is a women-led coalition working tirelessly to combat the threat of deep-sea mining.
